When Process Looks Like Pain

To move beyond where we are, we must learn to trust the process. For a long time, I did not understand what that really meant. In fact, I used to dislike the phrase because it sounded too simple for what I was actually feeling. When you are uncomfortable, uncertain, or waiting for change to show up, “trust the process” can feel like an answer that does not answer anything at all. But over time, I began to understand that the process is not punishment; it is preparation. It is the place where patience is developed, faith is strengthened, and growth quietly takes root before anyone else can see it.
In February 2025, I decided to loc my hair. I gave away the products I had been using, let go of the styles I was comfortable with, and committed to a journey that I could not rush. At first, it did not look the way I imagined. My hair was shorter than I expected, not as full as I wanted, and some days I looked in the mirror and wondered if I had made the right decision. There were moments when I wanted to quit, comb it out, or choose an easier route. But every time frustration showed up, my loctician would remind me, “Trust the process.” She had seen what I could not see yet. She knew that the beginning was not the finished product.
Reluctantly, I held on. I learned to care for what was growing even when it did not yet look like what I hoped for. I learned that some stages are necessary even when they are awkward. I learned that growth can be happening even when progress feels slow. One year later, I love the length, the fullness, the ease, and yes, the compliments do not hurt either. More than that, I love the reminder my hair gives me: what starts small, uncertain, and uncomfortable can become something beautiful when we give it time.
How does this apply to your process? What are you facing right now that you must go through, even though the struggle is real? Giving up can feel easier. Making excuses for why “it” will not work can roll off the tongue quickly. But if you quit too soon, you may never get to see what the process was producing in you. The strength, wisdom, confidence, discipline, and maturity you are praying for may develop in the very place you are tempted to abandon.
Trusting the process does not mean pretending that it is easy. It means believing that discomfort has purpose, the waiting has value, and the stretching is making room for something greater. It means honoring the season you are in without allowing frustration to make decisions for your future. The beginning may look nothing like the promise, but that does not mean the promise is not growing.
So, keep showing up. Keep watering what has been planted. Keep giving grace to the part of you that is still becoming. One day, you will look back and realize that the process did not break you; it built you. It did not delay you; it developed you. And when you finally stand in the fullness of what you once hoped for, you will understand why you had to grow through it to get to it. Trust the process, because there is still more on the other side.

This was truly an on‑time read. I never considered comparing my loc journey to my life journey, but it makes perfect sense. Sometimes ‘giving up feels easier” than waiting. Yet as a Christian, I’ve learned that victory often comes right after the waiting season. Thank you for sharing such a timely reminder.
