A Love Affair with Me

Several months ago, I found myself feeling low, unsettled, and unable to name exactly what was wrong. Then one day, six fuchsia roses arrived in the mail with a card that read, “No one loves you more than me.”

That moment became the beginning of a three-month affair that changed my life. My husband often sent me flowers, but these were not from him. I had sent them to myself. At first, I thought it would be funny, something lighthearted to lift my spirits. But what began as a small gesture soon became something much deeper. It led to quiet dinners alone, movie nights, long walks near the water, and intentional time spent simply being with me.

During those months, I learned how much I had been pouring into everyone else while leaving very little for myself. I discovered that self-love is not selfish; it is necessary. It is the quiet work of noticing your own needs, honoring your own heart, and choosing to show up for yourself with the same tenderness you so freely offer to others.

At the end of those three months, I thanked myself for giving me one of the best experiences of my life. I ended that season and returned to my relationships with my husband, family, and friends with a fuller heart. People began to say that I seemed different, and all I could do was smile. I had spent time with the one person who needed my love most: me. That time changed how I saw myself, and it made me better. Loving myself first made it easier, healthier, and more honest to love others.

Loving yourself, dating yourself, and becoming more intentional about your own wholeness can change the way you move through the world. When you nurture the person within, you gain the strength, peace, and confidence to pour into the lives of others without losing yourself in the process. That is the true journey of love: learning to love you, honor yourself, and allowing that love to overflow into every relationship around you.
